First You Are Too Young. Then You Are Too Old. Give Me A Break!

Everyone likes to give free advice. It is time to stop listening.

I have a newfound mantra when it comes to advise. I do not listen unless I seek it. There are many reasons I say this, and we can all relate.

Remember those times where we want to get out to earn some pocket money to buy a nice-looking pair of jeans? What happened to that thought bubble after speaking to Mum? I bet it sounded something like this.

“You are too young to flip burgers, son. Get back to your desk and practice your algebra, will you?”

And you put that idea off because you trust your mum. You rationalize your jeans away because you genuinely believe flipping burgers is not for you. Or someone your age, for that matter.

And we know that it does not sound right. We often see someone younger hustling in the fast-food restaurant as we pass by daily. We wonder what that missing link is. Still, we do not question. We wait.

We keep trying. We ask the same questions at 10-years old, at 11, at 12, at 13, at 14, at 15, and we get the same response without fail.

“You are too young to flip burgers, son. Get back to your desk and practice your algebra, will you?”

Before you know it, just so suddenly, you become too old for it. Try asking your parents whether you should flip burgers while in college. What would the answer be?

“Son, you are too old for that. You got to found a real job, a real part-time job that pays for your daily expenses.”

Okay, great. I have been told you are too young, you are too young, you are too young, you are too young, you are too young, you are too young, you are too young, and then just like that, I am too old?

What is wrong with you?!

I decided to formulate my own opinions from then on. No one tells me that I am too young or I am too old for something. I will go for it because I want to.
